Reminder: You must take the responsibility for being vigilant by always reconfirming the GF status of a menu item and addressing cross-contamination issues each and every time.

Del Mar Rendezvous describes it's food as "Chinese Fusion Cuisine". It provides an extensive gluten-free menu that is online and at the restaurant. Select "Menu" on their website, scan down to bottom of page and click on "Gluten Free Menu".

Notes from the restaurant's manager, Dan Screiber, in October 2009:

1. Our Gluten-free menu has over 40 items.

2. We have 18 lunch specials on our gluten-free lunch menu (11 of which are $9.95 or less).

3. We have been making gluten-free dishes for the entire 5 years of our restaurant's existence (and never had a complaint or reported incident of anyone becoming ill from our food, Gluten-Free or otherwise)

4. On our computers we have a section dedicated to our Gluten-Free items which specifically instructs the kitchen to make the dishes with our Gluten-free soy sauce and/or make other modifications as needed.  Additionally the servers are required to notify the kitchen and one of the managers whenever a table requests a Gluten-free dish as an additional fail-safe.

"I had dinner at Del Mar Rendezvous in Del Mar Plaza last night.
Excellent Chinese food by any measure. Very attentive service. They have a large gluten free menu with 20 items or so, including several noodle dishes and soups. Plenty of seafood, chicken and beef choices. No pork, as all their pork is cooked with traditional soy sauce. I also did not notice any duck on the gluten free menu. I didn't look at their menu with gluten items. We both were very pleased with the available selection and the quality of the food." Tim Mc. 1/6

I'm a vegetarian and my boyfriend has a gluten allergy. Needless to say, it's REALLY difficult to eat out. We typically stick to two restaurants (P.F. Chang's & Sammy's Woodfired Pizza) because I can find SOMETHING anywhere, and those restaurants offer a variety of gluten-free menu options. But we get sick of having so few places to go.

We found Rendezvous by searching online for gluten-free restaurants in San Diego, and decided to give it a go. We parked in the structure next door (they validate, so it's free!), and were greeted by a super nice manager at the door who immediately offered us a regular menu, a vegetarian menu, AND a gluten-free menu. MENU - not just a section of the menu. An entire menu. For each of us! You can imagine our excitement.

I ordered the "Triple S Tofu" which was quick-fried tofu cubes in sweet and sour sauce, and he had the "Beef with Broccoli". He was AMAZED and so pleased. The food was "delicious and so much better than Chang's" according to him. And my food was great, too! I would have liked to have some vegetables in with the tofu, or a vegetable entree to share with the table, but the tofu was great, the sauce was delicious (I asked for more on the side), and I was really happy.

And the wine was half off! We went on a Wednesday night, and apparently every Wednesday and Sunday nights bottles of wine are half-priced! Even if you are picking up an order to-go. Yes.

We were dressed nicely, as we were on a date, but there were lots of other people there wearing jeans and more casual clothes. And the prices were really reasonable - $13+ for vegetarian entrees, $14+ for meaty entrees.

It's one of our new favorites!

"I've been to Del Mar Rendevous twice and will definitely go again.  The waiter brought me a special GF menu and double-checked with the chef on everything without my having to ask him to do so.  The first time I had Mongolian beef which was freshly prepared and I would rate it average in flavor and taste for my personal preferences; however, I thought the salad dressing on the accompanying lunch salad was divine.  So the second time I got the crabmeat mango salad and it was awesome!  They bring you the fortune cookie for you to receive a fortune, but don't eat it! (not GF!)  Very delicious!  They currently have a 20% off coupon on their site and they will validate your parking for you.  I did not get sick either time and will definitely return!"
