Mainstream Food Stores
There are many different mainstream food stores in the San Diego area. The
biggest chains are probably Ralphs, Von's, and Albertson's. In the past
years, these stores have been quickly adding to their gluten-free selections.
Ask if they have a gluten-free section, or check the health-food aisle.
The new labeling law effective January 2006 will require all companies
to list wheat if it is in the product. So you will only need to be concerned
if questionable ingredients may contain rye, barley, or oats. When in
doubt, check either directly with the company, or use one of the GF
Food Guides available. Natural flavorings is one ingredient that should be checked on to verify if it is GF.
Albertsons has a significant gluten-free section in their stores. They provide a "gluten free food finder" that you can see online, or pick up at each store. It consists of a list of products that they carry which are gluten. This list also has a section listing some of the foods that are naturally gluten-free. On 10/7/11 a representative for Albertsons wrote:
"All around the store, Albertson's provides a large selection of gluten free products. You can find products located either in the bakery department, as well as throughout the store on our grocery aisles in each category you are looking for. And in some of our stores, we have all the gluten free products located in one "easy to find" location. You can ask the Store Director or Assistant Store Director to assist you with your gluten free needs in the store you shop."

"I was at Kroger's last night and noticed that they are putting gluten free labels on their Kroger brand products that are gluten free. I had to find the manager to thank him and to let him know that I would be making this my number one place to shop. Dae in Louisville KY 1/7/08
