After a discouraging visit to True Food Kitchen in Fashion Valley (see review), Paula visited Phil's Barbecue in San Marcos:

"On the other end of the spectrum at a restaurant I would not expect to bother with being gluten free, we happened to go past the Phil’s Barbeque in Vista and on a lark, I decided to go in and ask if they had anything that was gluten free.  Wow!  Was I impressed!  The person I asked took me directly to Sean who was very knowledgeable and sounded very confident of the information he was providing.  He assured me that Phil’s took allergies very seriously, and they know everything that goes into every one of their menu items, and they are extremely careful about cross contamination.  He said they have a completely separate fryer for French fries that is in a completely different area than the fryer for onion rings.

 Their ribs and barbeque sauce are completely gluten free.  We decided to indulge and eat there because he made me feel comfortable that the information was accurate (I always ask 2 or 3 times to make sure I get the same answer each time and nothing is missed.)  We placed our order and then he immediately ran over to the kitchen staff to double-alert them about the gluten free status of the order.  It was the first time my 8 year old ever ate barbeque ribs – he LOVED them!  Sean and another manager even came over to our table during our meal to make sure everything was ok."
