The Counter is a chain that opened it's first San Diego outlet in 2010. The Counter provides gluten-free information on their website at www.thecounterburger.com/allergens . They confirmed by email (see below) that a check-mark under "Gluten Free" means the menu item is indeed gluten-free.
From Laura Burkey at The Counter by email on 3/10/10: "I understand that the chart is not completely clear and we are working to adjust the content so it is easier to follow.
The gluten free column is a contradiction to the format of the rest of the chart. In that case, the check marks in the gluten free column show the items that are gluten free, whereas in the other columns, the check mark indicates that the menu item contains the allergen."
