The mission of the Warren Celiac Center is to advance the knowledge of celiac disease pathogenesis and to develop novel diagnostic and therapeutic advances. Community activities include increasing the medical and local community's knowledge about Celiac Disease. The Warren Center clinics at UCSD aim to provide state-of-the-art clinical care and education to adults and children with celiac disease.

Who's Who at the Warren Celiac Center

Dr. Martin Kagnoff Martin Kagnoff, MD, is the Director of the Warren Research Center. Dr. Kagnoff is a world renowned expert on Celiac Disease.

Dr. Greg Harmon The Warren Celiac Clinic for Adults: Gregory Harmon, MD, sees adult patients over the age 18 . The clinic is located at UCSD’s Perlmann Ambulatory Center, which is next to Thornton Hospital on the UCSD campus. Dr. Harmon received his medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. He completed Gastroenterology Fellowship training at UCSD. His research interests include studies of the biomarkers of celiac disease and inflammatory disorders of the intestine.

Dr. Kim Newton The Warren Celiac Clinic for Children: Dr. Kimberly P. Newton joined the Warren Celiac Center in January 2008, and directs the Pediatric Celiac Clinic at Rady Children’s Hospital. Dr. Newton received her medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and completed her pediatric gastroenterology fellowship training at Hasbro Children’s Hospital/Brown University.

Susan Algert

Dietician Services: Susan Algert, Ph.D., R.D. is available to provide nutritional counseling at the Centers to help patients manage thier dietary needs. She also puts on classes and other events for the public.


Linda Nelson Linda Nelson is the Warren Center Administrative Assistant. She initially takes all calls for both the Warren pediatric and adult clinics.

Making Appointments for the Celiac Centers

To make it as easy as possible for patients to make appointments, the Center asks that you following these guidelines.

Adult Appointments
  • Call the Warren Celiac Center at 858-822-1022. You may have to leave a message if no one is available to take your call.
  • To help Dr. Harmon better serve the community, Dr. Harmon asks that the Center help him in collecting preliminary information prior to patients seeing him.
  • Linda Nelson has established questions that she will ask those interested in seeing Dr. Harmon. Once the information is collected, she will email the information to Dr. Harmon and his Clinical Assistant.
  • Dr. Harmon’s Clinical Assistant will contact you to set up an appointment upon Dr. Harmon’s instruction.
  • Be prepared to bring your medical records with you to your appointment.

Pediatric Patients

  • It is best to call the Warren Center at 858-822-1022 to make appointments. This is due to problems patients have had making appointments when calling Children's Hospital directly.
  • Linda Nelson will collect the name of the parent/adult requesting their child be seen by at the Clinic, a contact number, and the name of the child.
  • This information will be emailed to the clinic, which will in turn instruct someone from the clinical staff to contact you to schedule an appointment.
  • Be prepared to bring a copy of the patient's medical records with you to your appointment.

My Gut and Celiac Disease
An informational, hands-on class for kids ages 12-17 with celiac disease

Date: Saturday, September 6, 2008 [REGISTRATION DEADLINE: AUGUST 29, 2008]
Time: 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Location: UCSD La Jolla Campus

Cost: $10 per child (Suggested minimum tax-deductible donation. Just note “Donation” in the memo line.)

Join Kimberly Newton, M.D., and Susan Algert, Ph.D., R.D., as they discuss the following topics:

  • What is celiac disease?
  • What happens to the GI tract in celiac disease?
  • From clinic to microscope: How are villi affected by celiac disease?

Nutrition Basics for those with Celiac Disease & Gluten Sensitivity
Date: Saturday, September 27, 2008 [REGISTRATION DEADLINE: SEPTEMBER 19, 2008]
Time: 9:00-11:00 a.m.
Location: UCSD La Jolla campus

Cost: $25 per person (Suggested minimum tax-deductible donation. Just note “Donation” in the memo line.)

Join Susan Algert, Ph.D., R.D. as she discusses the following topics:

  • Evaluating your diet for key nutrients—what are the top 3 nutrients that you need to target in your diet?
  • What is the best plan for when you get sick from eating hidden gluten?
  • Choosing the right foods when eating away from home.

Community Lecture

The Warren Celiac Center's September 19, 2007 community lecture "What You Need to Know About Celiac Disease and the Gluten-Free Diet” premiered on UCSD-TV on November 29, and was replayed several times during the week that followed.
